The screen room
A room where the light through the paper screens wakes you. The morning sun comes in softly, so no one has to open a curtain and wake the others. Futons for everyone are in the closet.

This is a translation of the Japanese original, provided for reference.
In front of the house: stone, moss and pines. You can sit straight down on the engawa — tea there in the morning, the fire there in the evening. A grill and a table stand in one corner of the garden all year, so bring charcoal and food and you can light it the evening you arrive.
Indoors, the ground floor is one continuous room. A tatami room and a boarded room are divided by paper screens: open them and it is one room, close them and it is two. At the far end the dining table seats everyone at once, and beyond it the kitchen has a large fridge, a dishwasher, a rice cooker and a microwave, so what you buy can go straight into the pot.
The bedrooms upstairs each have their own character: one where the light through the paper screens wakes you, one where futons go side by side so a family can stay together, one bright room facing the engawa. Open a window in any of them and the garden comes in.
Family gatherings, a weekend with old friends, a training camp or a shoot. The more of you there are, the less each pays.

A wide tatami room. Lay the futons side by side and a family can stay together; there is still room for open suitcases.

A bright room facing the engawa. Slide the screens open and the garden is right there. At night the garden lights reach faintly inside.

A quiet Japanese room with a tokonoma alcove, left as it was.
